No Monicagate no Bush presidency. That much is certain (see). And if we can trust Diane Blair and the Hillary Papers NO RUSH LIMBAUGH NO MONICAGATE. Rush Limbaugh, Bill's fiercest and most disconcerting conservative critic, who spearheaded what a paranoid Hillary described as the "vast rightwing conspiracy" to humiliate and undermine her husband's presidency, was, according to Blair, a factor in driving husband Bill into the sick and sordid relationship with "loony toon" Lewinsky, and consequently to impeachment.
As reported in the Washington Free Beacon which broke the story:
"When Clinton finally admitted to the relationship [with Lewinsky] after repeated denials, Hillary Clinton defended her husband in a phone call with Blair. She said her husband had made a mistake by fooling around with the “narcissistic loony toon” Lewinsky, but was driven to it in part by his POLITICAL ADVERSARIES, the loneliness of the presidency, and her own failures as a wife (see)."
Until Novermber 1995 Bill Clinton was behaving himself and keeping his zipper closed. What happened along the way to cause a relapse into philandering? Rush Limbaugh and the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy.
The question is this: in what way was Rush Limbaugh, chief among Buba's political adversaries, the strongest of three factors (ahead of White House loneliness and Hillary's wife failings) in making Monicagate and Clinton's impeachment possible?
Clinton, as we know, hated and feared Rush above all rightwing critics. And after two years of relentlessly pounding away at his character, policies and presidency Clinton had had it with Rush. Indeed, by 1995 (the year Clinton started his affair with Lewinsky) he was mad as hell and wasn't going to take it anymore. Seizing on the Oklahoma City bombing an irate, worried and inwardly hurt Clinton, fearing he'd be a one term president if he couldn't silent Rush, lashed out at him blaming him and his "vile and dangerous hate talk" for inciting the deadly attack. The charge of course was absurd. If Rush didn't exist Timothy McVeigh in a rage over Waco, Ruby Ridge, and other Federal law enforcement "crimes," would have struck the Murrah Building all the same.
Thin-skinned Bill was obsessed with Limbaugh and rightwing critics to the point of feeling deeply, emotionally, pathetically wounded. Lonely at the top and hurting badly inside-with wife Hillary unable or unwilling to assuage his pain (Blair claimed that by 1994 Hillary was "furious with Bill" for believing that he "ruined his presidency [and her future in politics]"-Clinton turned to Monica Lewinsky to escape the harsh realities besetting him. And the unintended results of his escapades were a humiliating scandal, impeachment, and the loss of the presidency to Republicans in 2000-thanks mainly to Rush.
